Google Chrome 14 Released

google-chrome14
Google Chrome 14 has now been released to the stable channel, making it the first time more than 100 million users will get a chance to see this latest Chrome version in action.

Google Chrome 14 doesn't boast an impressive list of new features or updates, with most of the new things, at least the interesting ones, happening under the hood.

That said, Google Chrome 14 lays the groundwork for future developments with Native Client, Google's technology for running native code from the web, reaching a mature state.

Native Client is enabled by default in Google Chrome, enabling developers to create more powerful and faster web apps than what's been possible before.

"Today, we’re happy to ship a new release to the Stable channel of Chrome, following up on last month’s Beta channel release. This release contains two significant technologies which allow developers to create even more powerful web apps and games," Brad Chen, Software Engineer at Google, announced.

"The Web Audio API enables developers to add fancy audio effects such as room simulation and spatialization," he listed one of the big new features in Google Chrome 14.

"Native Client is an open-source technology which allows C and C++ code to be seamlessly and securely executed inside the browser," he explained.

"Currently, Native Client only supports applications listed in the Chrome Web Store, but we are working to remove this limitation as soon as possible," he added.
Native Client holds a lot of promise and Google has been working on it for a couple of years. It hasn't been easy, but Google has reached a point where it can enable developers to write code once, put it up on the web and have it run, almost as fast as native code running on 'bare metal,' on any (x86) operating system supported by Chrome.

As always, if you already have Chrome installed, it will automatically update itself to the new version soon. If you haven’t taken Chrome for a spin yet, you can download it from www.google.com/chrome.

Applications for in-car use of Nokia smartphones

Nokia on Tuesday announced Nokia Car Mode, a standalone application optimized for the in-car use of Nokia smartphones at the ongoing IAA (Internationale Automobil Ausstellung) event.A company release said that the Nokia Car Mode features an optimized user interface simplifying the access and use of Nokia Drive (voice-guided car navigation with Nokia Maps), traffic updates, music and voice calls while driving. Nokia Car Mode, built with Qt, will be available for download from Nokia's Ovi Store in Q4 2011 for Nokia smartphones based on Symbian Belle - such as the recently launched Nokia 600, Nokia 700 and Nokia 701 - as well as the Nokia N9.

According to Nokia, the Nokia Car Mode is the first commercially available solution supporting MirrorLink, formerly known as Terminal Mode. MirrorLink is a standard smartphone-to-car connectivity platform driven by over 20 major global brands from across different industries within the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). With MirrorLink, smartphones can be connected to in-car displays, car controls systems, and car audio systems. Thus consumers can control their smartphones via the car dashboard, as if the device and its apps were integrated into the car itself.MirrorLink is increasingly gaining industry momentum. Among the first commercially available products presented at IAA besides Nokia Car Mode is Alpine's new ICS-X8, a dashboard-mounted unit that lets drivers of supported cars retrofit MirrorLink capabilities and Bluetooth hands-free phone. After connecting their Nokia smartphone with the Alpine ICS-X8, consumers are able to intuitively and safely use smartphone applications from the ICS-X8's large 7-inch high-resolution display.SINGAPORE: Nokia's decision to use MeeGo, the platform that the Finnish cellphone maker is planning to ditch, for the new N9 smartphone, has invited criticism from the analysts who feel that it would do little to halt the firm's slide in market share for handsets.

Nokia, once the ubiquitous name in hand phones, has lost ground in the smartphone market to Apple's iPhone and Google's Android devices, and in the low end of the market to Asian rivals such as ZTE and India's Micromax.

At a telecom conference in Singapore, Elop reiterated that Nokia would launch its first smartphone using Microsoft's Windows platform later this year, even as he unveiled the new 'all-screen' N9 smartphone, which uses a platform called MeeGo.

Microsoft to be release Windows 8 details

Microsoft is expected to offer the first public peek at its new operating system on Tuesday at a conference for Windows developers. The software giant has described Windows 8 as the most significant upgrade to its ubiquitous operating system since the company adopted the desktop, mouse and the graphical user interface with Windows 95.

Prior to that, personal computers running Microsoft’s operating systems were text—based and could only be operated by typing in commands. Naturally, the technology world is holding its breath for details of the new operating system, which is designed to be touch—screen friendly and compatible with both traditional PCs and tablet computers.

Microsoft has been quiet about what to expect at its Build Windows Conference, which starts Tuesday in Los Angeles, but announced Monday that it would live stream a keynote address by Windows chief Steve Sinofsky, which it said would “reveal important facts about Windows 8.”

Microsoft has previously said that the new OS would feature live tiles with notifications from Faceboook, email, calendar and other apps, and would dramatically improve start—up times when turning on the computer. Windows 8 will be the first Microsoft operating system designed to work both with Intel’s traditional PC architecture and the ARM chips that are used to run many tablets and smartphones.

The operating system is expected to hit the market in 2012, succeeding Windows 7, which is the most successful operating system in Microsoft’s history with more than 400 million copies sold.

Best Games of 2011

Every year new games are release and there's no end in sight to the reign of PC gaming. The visual quality of the best PC games makes the console based competition even more buzzing. PC gamers are also afforded a much more open ended gaming experience with most popular games. The craze for games is ever increasing in India and games like battlefield 2, Warfare have proved its superiority among the consumers. The market is eagerly waiting for the next upgraded version of their favorite games.

Lots of big games are already available on stores, while there are still some in waiting list. Here are top awaited games of 2011.

1. F1 2011
The F1 2011 will be releasing on 23rd September 2011. Codemasters finally brought back the joy of Formula 1 driving to the gaming world last year with Formula 1 2010. F1 2010 went on to sell millions and was a clear runaway success for both the franchise and the company.

The team has a lot to live up to after collecting a Bafta for the 2010 game which revolutionized F1 driving games, the new game will build extensively on multiplayer games and online gaming. Codemasters were given full access to schematics, designs and even team telemetry to ensure the game play is closely matched to the real thing.

A new feature, entitled Go Compete!, will allow gamers to race against each other in split screen in full HD for the first time with up to 16 players competing against each other during a grand prix. Two new tracks have been added to this year game, the brand new Buddh international circuit in India and the legendary Nurbergring.

2. Forza Motorsport

Forza Motorsport 4 is a racing video game developing by Turn 10 Studios for the Xbox 360. It will be the fourth installment in the Forza Motorsport series. The game will be the first in the series to support the Kinect sensor alongside the traditional controller-based gameplay. The achievements for Forza Motorsport 4 were released on August 27, 2011.

Players will be able to import their Forza Motorsport 3 profiles into Forza Motorsport 4, giving them the ability to transfer a certain amount of in-game credits and gifted cars into their new garage. The amount allowed transferred is based on how long they have played the game and how many cars and credits they have.

Forza's main success is in finding a blend between pleasing the notoriously fickle minority that likes its driving games consistently challenging and demandingly detailed, while introducing a set of user-friendly assists that will ensure that even those who are new to the racing genre will enjoy themselves. Forza may well be remembered as a title that, through its mix of challenge and control, introduced an entirely new set of fans to the beauty and power of driving games.

3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is an upcoming first-person shooter video game, currently being developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games with Raven Software assisting in development. It will be the third installment in the Modern Warfare series. Releasing on 8th November 2011.

This MW3 hands-on however was very different. Activision and Xbox had teamed up to bring a virtual ocean of 360 consoles. Modern Warfare 3 achieves the level of balance via several changes to its leveling, perk and killstreak system. Firstly weapons themselves now have proficiency levels, this means you find a gun you like and you can stick with it, building improvements onto as you go. This takes out some of the difficulty in the previous games faced when you start out, as in theory any gun you use can be as good as another, with practice at least.

Windows 8 to come with built-in Malware Protection

windows-8
Microsoft's next version of Windows will ship with "tons of security features," including one that automatically scans boot drives for malware and a revamped version of the Windows Defender antivirus program, company executives said.

At the company's BUILD conference in Anaheim, California on Tuesday, Corporate Vice President of Windows Planning and Ecosystem Michael Angiulo demonstrated an early version of Windows 8 that automatically scanned an infected USB drive used to boot the next generation operating system. Before the OS was able to load, the computer stopped the process and displayed a warning that the boot volume contained an "invalid signature" indicating it had been compromised.

He was able to get the valid version of Windows to load by turning off the system and turning it back on. The presentation starts around the 1:08 mark in the following video:

The technology making this possible is known as UEFI, short for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. A successor to the BIOS ROM firmware that Microsoft operating systems have relied on since their beginning, UEFI was designed to shorten the time it takes a PC to start up. It was built by Intel, but is designed to work with a variety of CPU architectures.

"It's not just about speed and having a boot that looks better," Angiulo said during Tuesday's keynote, referring to UEFI. "It's about security, too."
Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows and Windows Live division, went on to say that Windows 8 developers "have taken Defender and we've actually built a whole new range of protection, all the way up though antimalware, antivirus." Users are free to run Defender or security software supplied by another company. In all, the new OS will offer "tons of security features," he added.

The company issued a statement Wednesday saying Windows 8 would include "low-level security features such as Secured Boot to help defeat classes of threats, and user facing features including Windows Defender and SmartScreen" spam-filtering. The statement didn't elaborate.

Windows 8 will also offer a new way to log on to PCs equipped with a touchscreen. Sam Bowne, a security instructor at San Francisco City College, provided a screenshot here that describes the feature this way: "You choose the picture – and the gestures you use with it – to create a password that's uniquely yours."

Bowne and his students have been testing the security features in the new Windows beta, according to a source.

"There is built in antivirus, and it works!" he wrote "It stopped not only thr EICAR test file, but more than a dozen malware items in Metasploit. So it might be time to sell your Symantec stock."

How to Install Windows 8 via USB Drive

windows8

Microsoft has just released a developer preview of its new operating system Windows 8. Users can now download the preview and install on their system to see how its works. But there is just one problem and that is you can't update an existing version of windows, it requires a clean installation.

It is a straight forward process when installing it with a CD/DVD Drive but if you're like me that has a 10inch notebook which doesn't come with a DVD drive then the only solution is to install via a USB stick or drive.

Installing Windows 8 from a USB drive is not that friendly because it requires more preparation that just burning an ISO image to disk and putting that ISO into the DVD drive of the computer.

You will need at least four Gigabytes free space of USB drive, which you have to first format with the FAT32 file system. This is done by connecting the USB drive to the company, right click its drive letter and select Format from the options. The Format windows pops up where you need to make sure that FAT32 is the selected file system. Everything else can be left as they are.

installing-windows-8

After the formatting is finished, you will need access to the Windows 8 ISO or DVD. The developer preview is only provided as an ISO image. Check out Windows 8 Download for instructions or download the developer preview right here.

The easiest way to copy Windows 8 to an USB drive and make that drive bootable at the same time is to use Microsoft’s Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. While designed specifically for Windows 7, it appears to work just fine to create a bootable Windows 8 USB key as well.

installing-windows-8

Just select the Windows 8 ISO when asked to pick an ISO image from the computer. Then select to copy the contents to an USB drive. The program will copy all files to the drive and make that drive bootable at the same time. You can download the Microsoft tool from here.

Install Windows 8

You plug in your USB key into the computer you want to install Windows 8 on. You need to tell the computer on first start to boot from USB and not from hard drive or another location. This is done in the Bios. You usually enter the Bios with F1, F1, Delete, Esc or another key that is highlighted on the screen on Post. Press that key and look for an entry that says Boot or Boot order and make sure that USB has the highest priority on the system. You can easily repeat the steps if the computer is not booting from USB.

The computer should pick up the installation files on the USB drive automatically and installation should commence.

Windows 8 has the following system requirements:

  • 1 Gigahertz or faster 32-bit or 64-bit processor
  • 1 Gigabyte of RAM for 32-bit, 2 Gigabytes of RAM for 64-bit minimum
  • 16 Gigabyte hard drive for 32-bit systems, 20 Gigabyte for 64-bit systems
  • Direct X 9 graphics card
Note: It is also possible to install Windows 8 by mounting the ISO image directly on another Windows system. The instructions have been posted on Reddit.

If you want to install the Windows Developer Preview, but have no blank DVDs or usable thumb drives, fear not. It’s fairly simple. This assumes you are installing the preview on a computer already running Windows, of course.

  • Download the ISO file from Microsoft.
  • Mount the ISO using Daemon Tools, Clone Drive, or similar.
  • This is important. Do not use the autorun installer. The autorun installer only allows you to upgrade your existing Windows installation and will not allow you to install to a separate hard drive or partition.
  • Navigate to the virtual install disc and go to the folder called “sources”.
  • Run setup.exe and proceed as if installing Windows Vista or 7.

Windows 8 Developer Preview

win8-start-screen
Those of you interested in taking the current flavor of Windows 8 for a spin can now download and install the Developer Preview edition.

Being demoed at Microsoft's Build conference, the Developer Preview is a prebeta version showing off the operating system at its current stage. Though technically designed for developers, no registration is required, so anyone can download and install it.

The Windows 8 Preview is being offered in three different packages--a 64-bit version with various developer tools, a 64-bit version of just the operating system, and a 32-bit version of the OS.

All three come as ISO files--image files of the contents of a CD or DVD. Since each of the packages is several gigabytes in size, you'll need a DVD if you want to burn the files to a disc.

In Windows 7, you can burn the ISO file to a DVD by double-clicking it to open the Windows Disc Image Burner. For older operating systems, you can use a tool such as ISO Recorder to burn the file. Alternatively, you can use such utilities as Virtual CloneDrive or Daemon Tools to "mount" the ISO file as a drive, eliminating the need to burn it onto a disc.

Since this is a prebeta version, you'll want to install the OS on a spare PC or in a virtual environment so that it doesn't interfere with your production or work machine.

Those of you who want to know what you're getting into before you attempt to install the Developer Preview can check out a hands-on early look at Windows 8.

What's next after the Developer Preview?

Speaking at the Build conference yesterday, Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president of Microsoft's Windows division, said that Windows 8 will next segue into one beta version, followed by one Release Candidate. Assuming all goes well, we can then expect the final RTM (release to manufacturing) edition sometime after that.

Sinofsky didn't reveal a specific timeframe for the beta or Release Candidate. However, the company has been expected to launch the beta at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in January, according to WinRumors.

Facebook Unveils Subscribe Button

facebook-subscribed-button.png
Facebook is rolling out a feature that introduces an entirely new relationship category to the social networking site.

Until now, users could only “friend” one another on Facebook. Starting today, they'll also be able to "subscribe" to each other thanks to a new setting that allows individual profiles to behave more like Facebook fan pages.

A user will have the option of adding a "subscribe" button to her profile to enable people who are not her friends to see her public updates in their News Feeds, rather than having to visit her profile page directly. She will receive a notification when someone has signed up to see her updates, and will have the option of controlling who can comment on and "like" her posts.

“Some people who post publicly have a public presence and want to interact with people beyond their friends,” Naomi Gleit, director of product at Facebook, said. “This allows them to reach people beyond their friends.”
In a blog post, Facebook suggested that "journalists, artists and political figures" might take advantage of the new tool. “If you see a Subscribe button on your favorite blogger’s profile, this means you can subscribe. Just click the button to get their public updates right in your News Feed,” Facebook wrote.

Though it remains to be seen how -- and if -- users will take to this feature, the subscribe button appears to have the potential to shift the social dynamic on Facebook by changing how people connect and how they communicate.

Facebook etiquette may redefined as people are forced to decide whether it’s more appropriate to “friend” someone they just met or merely "subscribe" to him. Is it too forward to "friend" a boss instead of "subscribing" to her? Is it creepy to "subscribe" to a girl you just met? Will you be offended if a colleague chooses not to "subscribe" to you after you "subscribe" to her?

Facebook’s new feature marks yet another effort to encourage people to share more on the social networking site, this time by carving out a new space for individuals to post information to a far broader audience than their friends. It enables Facebook to function more like Twitter and suggests an effort to encourage public figures to update Facebook the same way they tweet -- frequently, publicly, with breaking news or short musings. If "subscriptions" catch on, could it change the nature of what people share on Facebook? Rather than primarily viewing it as a platform for communication among friends, some users that had seen Facebook as a place for personal updates could transition from sharing to broadcasting.

The subscribe button is also an attempt to improve the relevance of what Facebook users see in their News Feeds. Not only can it be used to sign up to see posts by non-friends, but it will also enable users to fine-tune what information appears about their friends.

The tab, which will be visible at the top of all friends’ profile pages under the heading "subscribed," lets users tell Facebook to show more, less, or the same amount of information about a person.

"Until now, it hasn’t been easy to choose exactly what you see in your News Feed. Maybe you don’t want to see every time your brother plays a game on Facebook, for example. Or maybe you’d like to see more stories from your best friends, and fewer from your coworkers," Facebook wrote. "With the Subscribed button, you can choose how much you see from them."
Facebook wants the status updates it displays to be interesting -- people will not return to the site as frequently if they’re shown posts from people they care little about -- and the subscriber tool enables Facebook to receive feedback on whose updates it should or should not include. Selecting "all updates" from a dropdown menu will tell Facebook you are interested in “everything" a friend posts; choosing "most updates" indicates you’re pleased with the status quo; and picking “only important” will limit the updates you view to major events.

“We want to give people more control over what people see in their News Feeds,” Gleit said. “Facebook is growing quickly and people have more and more friends, but they care about different people more or less, and different stories more or less.”

Bittorent Site Compromised, Serves Malware to Downloaders

uTorrent
Attackers hijacked two popular Bittorrent websites and tampered with their download mechanisms, causing visitors trying to obtain file-sharing software to instead receive malware.

The hacks on bittorrent.com and utorrent.com replaced the sites' standard software downloads with a piece of fake antivirus software known as Security Shield, an advisory warned. Anyone who downloaded and installed software from those sites between 4:20 a.m. California time and 6:10 a.m. should scan their systems immediately for infections.

Once installed, Security Shield delivers false reports that a computer is infected with multiple pieces of malware and prompts the user for payment before claiming to disinfect the machine. The attack affected only users who downloaded and installed software from bittorrent.com and utorrent.com during the hour-and-fifty-minute window that the sites were compromised. Those who installed software previously are unaffected.

"We take the security of our systems and the safety of our users very seriously," the Bittorrent advisory stated. "We sincerely apologize to any users who were affected."

iPad 3 new version

Simplo Technology and Dynapack International Technology have been awarded contracts to produce the battery for the Apple iPad 3, both companies are already suppliers for the current iPad and Apple's MacBook laptops.

The new battery has been changed up. It will be thinner and lighter--which may or may not mean the iPad 3 will also be thinner and lighter. The battery will also have a longer service life than the iPad 2. Thinner, lighter, longer-lasting iPad 3's battery will cost Apple 20 percent to 30 percent more to make. The new battery pack will be required to meet the CTIA IEEE 1625 standard. This standard provides a basis for creating higher quality batteries to meat higher safety requirements.

The battery is to begin mass production late in the fourth quarter of this year, and the tablet is expected to reach full production during the first quarter of 2012. This puts the iPad 3 on store shelves at about the one-year mark from the launch of the iPad 2.

Hackers break into Linux Foundation and Linux.com, both taken offline

Linux-Foundation
It's barely two week kernel.org Linux archieve site suffered an attack, the Linux Foundation has removed its websites from the web completely to clean up from a "security breach."

A notice posted on the Linux Foundation said the entire infrastructure including LinuxFoundation.org, Linux.com, and their subdomains are down for maintenance due to a security breach that was discovered on September 8, 2011.

The group said, they have made this decision in the interest of extreme caution and security best pratices and believed this breach was connected to the intrusion on kernel.org.

More from the Linux Foundation announcement:

We are in the process of restoring services in a secure manner as quickly as possible. As with any intrusion and as a matter of caution, you should consider the passwords and SSH keys that you have used on these sites compromised. If you have reused these passwords on other sites, please change them immediately. We are currently auditing all systems and will update this statement when we have more information.

We apologize for the inconvenience. We are taking this matter seriously and appreciate your patience. The Linux Foundation infrastructure houses a variety of services and programs including Linux.com, Open Printing, Linux Mark, Linux Foundation events and others, but does not include the Linux kernel or its code repositories.
Although the Kernel.org site is still offline after that compromise which was discovered on August 28th, most of the services offered by the Linux Foundation will be restored immediately the breach has been neutralized and new security measures put in place.
